Avocado Hair Mask for Dry Hair: Recipe and Facts

An overripe avocado is too soft for toast but just right for a creamy hair mask. It can make dry ends feel softer for a while. Here is how to make it smooth enough to rinse out, and what science really says about it.

Avocados are eaten all over the world, and in plenty of homes a too-ripe one ends up on someone's hair instead of in the bin. Mashed avocado is thick, creamy and oily, which is exactly what dry, rough ends seem to ask for.

It is a pleasant, cheap treat. It is also messy, and its effect is temporary. The main mistake people make is not mashing it smoothly enough, then spending twenty minutes picking green bits out of their hair. This guide fixes that, and is honest about the limits.

Why people use it

Dry hair feels rough because the outer layer of each strand, the cuticle, has been roughened by washing, heat, sun, coloring or brushing. Rough strands catch on each other, tangle and frizz. Anything slippery that coats the hair can make it feel smoother for a while, and avocado flesh is naturally slippery.

People usually blend it with a spoonful of oil to thin it, and leave it on the lengths of the hair before shampooing. Afterwards hair often feels softer and easier to comb.

Smooth Avocado Hair Mask

Makes 1 treatment for shoulder-length hair · Ready in about 30 minutes

You need

  • very ripe avocado, with no brown or stringy parts1/2
  • olive oil or another plain cooking oil1 tbsp (15 ml)
  • water or your usual conditioner, to thin1 to 2 tbsp (15 to 30 ml)

Method

  1. Scoop the avocado into a small blender or bowl. Remove any fibrous or brown bits, which will not blend smoothly.
  2. Blend or mash with the oil until there are no lumps at all. If mashing by hand, push it through a sieve with the back of a spoon. This step is what makes it rinse out easily.
  3. Thin with a little water or conditioner until it spreads like thick yogurt.
  4. Apply to damp hair from the mid-lengths to the ends. Keep it off your scalp if your scalp is oily or prone to flakes.
  5. Twist hair up loosely, cover with an old towel or a shower cap, and leave for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Rinse very well with warm water, then shampoo your scalp and condition as usual.
  7. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is still in.

Tips

  • Use the mask the day you make it. Mashed avocado browns quickly and should not be stored for later.
  • Work over a towel. Avocado can mark light-colored fabrics.
  • Once a week is plenty. If your hair feels heavy or greasy afterwards, use less oil next time.

What the evidence says

We found no clinical studies of avocado hair masks. There is no good evidence that avocado makes hair grow, thicker or stronger, and claims about its vitamins feeding the hair are not backed by research on people.

What is well understood is how conditioning works. A review of hair cosmetics in the International Journal of Trichology explains that conditioners reduce friction between strands, make combing easier and cut down frizz. It also warns that once the cuticle is worn away, the inner hair is exposed and the strand can break. Protecting the cuticle is the real goal.

An avocado mask probably works the same way as any rich coating: it smooths the surface for a while and washes off over the next few shampoos. That can be a nice weekly treat, but your everyday conditioner and gentle habits matter more. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using conditioner after washing your hair, and putting conditioner through the full length of dry or curly hair.

Habits that help dry hair more than any mask

The AAD's list of habits that damage hair is a good checklist. Wrap hair in a towel to soak up water instead of rubbing it. Use a wide-tooth comb on damp hair rather than brushing it wet. Keep blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons on low heat and use them less often, about once a week or less if you can. Space out coloring, perms and relaxers, and do only one chemical service at a time.

If you swim, the AAD suggests a swim cap, rinsing straight after swimming and following with a deep conditioner.

Questions people ask

Can I use avocado oil instead of fresh avocado?

Yes. A teaspoon or two of plain avocado oil on the ends is less messy. It most likely works the same way, as a temporary coating.

Will an avocado mask help hair grow?

There is no good evidence that it does. It can make dry ends feel softer, but it does not change how hair grows.

How do I get avocado bits out of my hair?

Rinse for longer with warm water while working conditioner through, then comb gently with a wide-tooth comb. Next time, blend or sieve it until completely smooth.
