Golden milk is warm milk simmered with turmeric and gentle spices. It is comforting, easy to make, and a lovely drink for a cool evening.

Turmeric gets a lot of big promises online. This guide keeps things honest: a reliable recipe, what the science actually shows, why a pinch of black pepper often goes in, and who should be careful.

Why people use it

Turmeric is a root in the ginger family, and its bright color comes from compounds called curcuminoids, including curcumin. It has been used in cooking and traditional medicine for a very long time.

In Europe, turmeric is recognized as a traditional herbal medicine for mild digestive problems such as a feeling of fullness, slow digestion and wind. Many people also drink golden milk simply as a warm, soothing treat.

Turmeric Golden Milk

Makes 1 mug (250 ml) · Ready in about 10 minutes

You need

  • milk or unsweetened plant milk250 ml (1 cup)
  • ground turmeric1/2 teaspoon
  • freshly ground black pepper1 small pinch
  • ground cinnamon1/4 teaspoon
  • fresh ginger, or a pinch of ground ginger2 thin slices
  • maple syrup or sugar (optional)1 teaspoon

Method

  1. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and whisk in the turmeric, black pepper and cinnamon until smooth.
  2. Add the ginger and warm over low heat, whisking now and then, until steaming, about 4 to 5 minutes. Do not let it boil.
  3. Remove from the heat, cover and let it sit for 2 minutes.
  4. Strain into a mug, stir in sweetener if you like, and drink warm.

Tips

  • Turmeric stains. Use a steel or glass pan and rinse spoons right away.
  • Whisk well before pouring, as the spices tend to settle.
  • Make a small jar of the dry spice mix so a mug takes only minutes.

What the evidence says

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says we do not know enough to conclude that turmeric or curcumin is beneficial for any health purpose. Early research on osteoarthritis looks promising, but better studies are needed.

Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that curcumin is poorly absorbed and quickly broken down by the body, which is a major reason results in people have been limited.

Most studies use concentrated extracts, not the small amount of turmeric in a mug of golden milk. Enjoy the drink for what it is, not as a medicine.

Why add black pepper?

Black pepper contains piperine, which is added to many curcumin products because it improves how much curcumin the body absorbs.

That research is on supplements. Whether a pinch of pepper in a drink makes a meaningful health difference is not known, but it does add a pleasant warmth that balances the earthy turmeric.

Questions people ask

Can I take turmeric supplements instead?

Supplements are much more concentrated than food and carry more risk, including rare liver injury. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting one, especially if you take other medicines.

Is golden milk good for joint pain?

Early research on turmeric extracts for osteoarthritis looks encouraging, but it is not conclusive, and a mug of golden milk contains far less than the amounts studied.

Can children drink golden milk?

A mild golden milk with food amounts of spice is a normal drink in many homes. Turmeric medicines, however, are intended for adults only, so do not use it as a remedy for children.
