Olive Oil and Lemon in the Morning: Myths and Facts
A shot of olive oil and lemon juice on an empty stomach is shared as a liver cleanse, a gallbladder flush and a weight-loss trick. Both are excellent foods, but this ritual promises far more than it can deliver.

Olive oil and lemon belong together in kitchens from the Mediterranean to the Middle East and far beyond. Drizzled over salads, grilled vegetables or fish, they are one of the simplest and most delicious pairings there is.
Somewhere along the way, the pair also became a morning ritual: a tablespoon or more of olive oil with lemon juice, taken on an empty stomach. It is said to cleanse the liver, flush out gallstones, aid digestion and help with weight loss. Here is a fair look at those claims, what the evidence says, and how to get the real benefits of these two foods.
The claims behind the ritual
The everyday version is a small shot each morning to support digestion and the liver. A more extreme version, often called a liver or gallbladder flush, involves fasting, then drinking a large amount of olive oil with lemon or grapefruit juice. Promoters say that the small green lumps that appear in the toilet afterward are gallstones being flushed out.
The appeal is easy to understand. The ingredients are familiar, cheap and natural, and the idea of a quick internal clean-up is reassuring.
Lemon, Olive Oil and Herb Dressing
You need
- extra virgin olive oil6 tbsp
- fresh lemon juice2 tbsp
- finely grated lemon zest, from a washed lemon1 tsp
- mustard, optional, to help it blend1 tsp
- finely chopped fresh parsley1 tbsp
- dried oregano1/2 tsp
- salt and freshly ground black pepper1 pinch
Method
- Put the lemon juice, lemon zest, mustard, salt and pepper in a small clean jar.
- Add the olive oil, close the lid tightly and shake for 20 to 30 seconds until the dressing looks creamy.
- Stir in the parsley and oregano and taste. Add a little more lemon or salt if needed.
- Spoon over salad, grilled vegetables, beans, grains or fish just before serving.
- Keep any leftover dressing in the fridge and use it within 4 days.
Tips
- The oil may thicken in the fridge. Let the jar stand at room temperature for 10 minutes and shake again.
- Fresh herbs or garlic in oil should never be stored at room temperature, because of the risk of botulism. Keep it chilled and use it within 4 days, or freeze it.
- Swap the parsley for fresh dill, mint or basil depending on the dish.
What the evidence says
Your liver does not need a special drink to clean itself. Cleveland Clinic explains that one of the liver's main jobs is filtering the blood and breaking down toxins and germs so your body can remove them in urine and stool. It also makes bile, which helps you digest food.
The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reports that a 2015 review found no convincing research that detox diets remove toxins from the body or help with weight management. Any early weight loss on these programs tends to come from eating less and is usually regained. There are no long-term studies of these programs.
We could not find reliable health sources showing that olive oil and lemon removes gallstones. Gallstones are a medical problem, and trying to flush them at home can delay the care you need. As for a daily spoonful, there is no evidence that the timing, on an empty stomach, adds anything. If food or weight is causing you distress, talk to your doctor.
What is actually good about them
None of this means olive oil and lemon are bad for you. Cleveland Clinic suggests a Mediterranean-style diet, built on whole foods and healthy fats, as one way to look after your liver, together with limiting alcohol, not smoking and taking medicines only as directed.
The difference is in how you use them: as part of real meals, rather than as a shot. If you are prone to indigestion or heartburn, it is also worth knowing that the NHS advises avoiding rich and fatty foods, so a spoonful of oil on its own is best skipped.
Questions people ask
Does olive oil and lemon cleanse the liver?
No. A healthy liver filters your blood and breaks down toxins on its own. What helps it most is a balanced diet, little alcohol, not smoking and using medicines only as directed.
Can olive oil and lemon pass gallstones?
We found no reliable evidence that it does. If you have symptoms of gallstones, see a doctor rather than trying a flush at home.
Is it harmful to take a spoonful every morning?
For most healthy adults a small amount is not dangerous, but it brings no proven extra benefit. The same oil and lemon are better enjoyed as part of a meal.
